Biography of David M. Sullivan, D.D.S., M.S.
David is a practicing Pediatric Dentist, Qualified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. He has been in private practice in Cincinnati, Ohio since the completion of his internship and residency Pediatric Dentistry at the Children's Hospital Medical Center in June of 1982. He was chosen by the Cincinnati Center for Developmental Disorders as their Fellow in 1982. He was also selected that year as Chief Dental Resident. He has served as a member of the Cranifoacial Anomaly Team as The Cincinnati College of Medicine and a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Pediatric Surgery.
Since completing his residency in Pediatric Dentistry, he has been very active in postgraduate education. He has served as an instructor and pursued advanced training in restorative dentistry, anesthesiology and orthodontic treatment as it relates to Pediatric Dentistry. David has studied with Dr. Walter Doyle and has completed a series of post-doctorate seminars with him and received an award from him as The Most Outstanding Academician to complete this program. He was also recognized as the Outstanding Clinician for that series of seminars as selected by his peers. He has also completed other postgraduate training programs in Orthodontics from International Association of Orthodontics, American Association of Orthodontics and The American Orthodontic Association. He has studied with Dr. Robert Gerety, Dr. Jerry Laffer, Dr. Terry Dischinger, Dr. Robert Gollaher and Dr. Scott Dillingham, with whom he trained at Cincinnati Childrens Hospital Medical Center, and all of who are Internationally recognized clinicians and lectures. David has recently completed a seminar series with Dr. Ruel Bench, also an internationally recognized figure in Bioprogressive Orthodontics and keynote speaker at the 1995 American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Annual Session.
David has served two terms as President of the Dental Staff at Cincinnati Childrens Hospital Medical Center. The Cincinnati Dental Society has asked him to direct the program for Childrens Dental Health Month stressing the importance of prevention and heightening awareness for dentistry for children. In 1983, 1992 and 1994 the State of Ohio and The Ohio Dental Association for the contribution and programs recognized him for the Childrens Dental Health Month.
David was asked to contribute to the textbook, DENTISTRY for the Child and Adolescent, written by Dr. Ralph McDonald, Edited by Dr. David Avery and has done so in every edition since the Third Edition published in 1984. This was the first book published devoted to pediatric dentistry, and still serves as the primary reference for pediatric dentistry throughout the world.
He has participated in a variety of clinical research areas, including prevention, sedation, restorative dentistry and has published an article related to children's apprehension and physiologic parameters. In 1982 David was asked to serve on the Scientific Board for the Cincinnati Zoo, one of the best zoos in the world. He has been the sole provider for the dental care at the Cincinnati Zoo since 1982. He also provides the care for the research animals at the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine. He was asked to participate as a keynote speaker at the first ever conference on Veterinary Dentistry, "Vetadontics" in 1984. He has numerous publications regarding Veterinary Dentistry and Exotic Animal Dentistry; has been invited to participate in the Eastern States Veterinary Conference since 1985. David has lectured and given courses in veterinary restorative dentistry, endodontics, orthodontics, orthodontics dental surgery throughout the United States. He has contributed to several books on dentistry for animals. He has treated animals from the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., The Bronx Zoo, Lincoln Park Zoo, The Columbus Zoo, The Ohio State University, Wild Animal Safari, The Kings Island Wild Animal Park, The San Diego Zoo, The Zoo of Mexico City, the white tigers of Sigfried and Roy, as well as exotic and domestic animals from a variety of other shows and exhibits.
David has recently been asked to serve on the Scientific Advisory Board for the National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias and as Delegate to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry representing the State of Ohio, The Ohio Association of Pediatric Dentists and the component society of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
July 1, 2000, David accepted a position on the faculty of The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. His teaching position is through the Department of Pediatrics at the Cincinnati Childrens Hospital Medical Center. His teaching responsibilities include Advanced Clinical Pediatric Dentistry, supervision of the fellows, residents and interns in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry.
